In the new hybrid world of work, it’s more important than ever before to ensure that employees settle in well and that they are aware of your company’s values, processes, expectations, vision and goals, from their very first day.

And, in a time where Hybrid working is quickly becoming the norm as we continue to manoeuvre the challenges that come hand in hand with Covid 19, it’s important that effective onboarding processes are prioritised.

What is Hybrid working?

Hybrid working has changed the way we now work. Mixing different ways of working, this concept encompasses lots of working models including flexible working days, remote working, set days in the office and alternating shift patterns.

And, there are a whole host of policies, strategies, software, systems and tools that you can utilise in all areas of your business to ensure that your workforce is happy, productive and heard during these uncertain times.

Onboarding new employees during Hybrid work

The key to overseeing successful on-boarding is to start the process long before a new employee’s first day. After all, a person’s first day is already overwhelming, with lots to digest.  With this in mind, it can help to touch base with new starter before their start date.

Talk them through what they can expect on their first day, as well as anything else they need to know before their start date. This also gives them the change to ask you any questions too.

Regular one to ones

Conducting regular 121 meetings are crucial in any working environment, especially if face to face contact is limited and staff are working remotely. Frequent 121s should be encouraged from the offset, as they provide the opportunity for employees to raise any concerns, discuss their performance, outline goals and talk generally about how they are feeling at work.

Even if employees are working from home, there’s lots of software including Zoom and Teams that will allow you to communicate with employees on a regular basis.

Onboarding buddy

Buddy systems are used across many working environments and they can not only make employees feel welcome and supported, but this point of contact can prove invaluable during the onboarding process.

Helping employees to feel productive and supported in their new role, allocating a buddy to new arrivals can also help new employees to expand their networks and pick up their new role far more quickly.

Employee experience

Finally, it’s important that employee experience is a top priority. Things you can do to ensure that the onboarding processes run seamlessly include sending new remote employees their hardware well in advance of their start date, ensuring that they have the right equipment to carry out their job and of course, you should also make sure that they are aware of the tools they can use to communicate with their employees.
