Why Employee Perks And Company Culture Is Important

December 17, 2018 By Debra Lumsden

There would be no business without your team members and many will agree that people are the most important asset to a business. To keep your staff loyal, happy and engaged in their job, employee perks and a positive company culture can be extremely beneficial, even more so than changes to their salary.

Whether perks are offered in the form of healthcare, training, gym memberships or a free snack bar, they make employees feel valued, and if they fit in with the culture of the business, it will make an impact on their overall productivity in the workplace.

What are employee perks?

Employee perks include both monetary and non-monetary benefits that are usually tied to the wellbeing and lifestyle of your team. These perks can increase workers’ productivity, promote a positive company culture and encourage loyalty to the business.

Example of some employee perks:

  • Paid sick days
  • Flexible working
  • Private healthcare
  • Gym membership discounts
  • Development or training programmes
  • Wellness programmes
  • Team building activities
  • Food and refreshments

Almost anything can be offered as a perk and no matter how big or small the gesture is, it’s these perks that make the workplace inviting and enjoyable for employees.

What is company culture?

Company culture is the personality and ethos of a company. It’s what defines the workplace from values, goals, ethics, and the overall working environment for employees. For example, some companies will have a more traditional culture with formal management and others will have a more relaxed approach enabling employees to participate at every level.

If an employee fits into the company culture, it is more likely that they will enjoy their job role and feel comfortable. However, if an employee doesn’t fit in with the culture, they are more likely to be less happy and less productive. It’s important to have a clear idea of your company culture as you want to attract the best talent for your team.

When it comes to deciding what perks you want to offer and how you want your company culture to appear, you need to think about the type of staff you want to attract and what they want out of a workplace. By offering benefits and a suited culture to the work you do, you will likely have a better relationship with your employees and it will lead to a positive work-life balance as staff will feel supported and valued.

Here at Oculus HR, we offer trusted support, advice and HR knowledge that can provide you with the understanding needed to implement new policies and procedures into your business.
